The United States retained the women's World Cup on Sunday as a Megan Rapinoe penalty and a superb Rose Lavelle strike gave the holders a 2-0 victory over a battling Netherlands side in the final in Lyon.

The victory underlines the USA's status as the dominant force in international women's football as they claim the World Cup for the fourth time in eight editions.

The U.S. women's soccer team have now won the Women World Cup for the fourth time.

Megan Rapinoe scored a penalty kick in the 61st minute and Rose LaValle added a goal of her own in the 69th

Dutch goalie Sari van Veenendaal was spectacular in the first half, making four saves as the two teams went into halftime knotted in a scoreless tie. The Americans had scored in the first 12 minutes of every other game

The American women have four World Cup titles, which ties them for second with the Italian men and the German men for the most all time. Only the Brazilian men's team has won more titles - five.

As has been the case throughout the tournament, Rapinoe did not sing the national anthem with teammates.

New York mayor Bill de Blasio took to Twitter to announce a parade in the team's honor on Wednesday. The parade will go up a stretch of Broadway that's hosted many celebratory parades known as the 'Canyon of Heroes,' where everyone from New York Yankees legends to American astronauts have been honored.

Fans, many dressed in red, white and blue, chanted 'Equal Pay!' at the final whistle, a reminder players sued the U.S. Soccer Federation in March claiming gender discrimination.

The U.S. never trailed in the tournament and set records with 26 goals and a 12-game World Cup winning streak.

U.S. coach Jill Ellis became the first coach to lead a team to two Women's World Cup titles.

President Donald Trump had already invited the U.S. women's team to the White House, 'win or lose,' but forward Alex Morgan said the decision would be made as a team. Rapinoe previously said she would not go

For four years, the jersey worn by the U.S. women’s national soccer team has featured three blue stars above the logo, signifying the World Cup championships won across almost three decades.

On Sunday, as the players danced and hugged amid confetti and celebration following a 2-0 victory over the Netherlands, they were handed new shirts made especially for the occasion.

And above the crest — and over their hearts — sat a gold star, recognition of what they had accomplished over four incredible weeks in France and over 90 difficult minutes in front of a sold-out crowd of 57,900 at Stade de Lyon.

“To see us four years ago go from two to three [stars] and now three to four,” forward Alex Morgan said, “it’s really a dream come true.”
