Paul Pogba was Jose Mourinho's saviour as Manchester United came from behind to beat Newcastle 4-1 at Old Trafford.
A slip from Victor Lindelof allowed Dwight Gayle to hand Newcastle a shock early lead - the first Premier League goal United have conceded at home this season - but Pogba inspired a comeback win for the Red Devils.
The France midfielder - back after two months on the sidelines due to a hamstring injury - assisted Anthony Martial to level the game eight minutes from the interval, and Chris Smalling headed in an Ashley Young cross in added time to send United into half-time in front.
United were in attacking mode after the break, and Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford combined to tee up Pogba for a simple finish on 54 minutes.
Lukaku had been thwarted numerous times by some outstanding Magpies defending, but finally got his goal as he thrashed home from close range after a fine touch from Juan Mata.
There was more good cheer to come for the United fans as Zlatan Ibrahimovic returned off the bench to huge cheers after seven months out with a serious knee injury.
A comeback to remember for Paul Pogba
It was a comeback to remember for Paul Pogba, who produced a Man-of-the-Match display on his return to first-team football for Manchester United on Saturday.
After being on the sidelines for the last 12 games following a hamstring injury, the Frenchman looked as if he had never been away, grabbing an assist and a goal as the Reds dismantled Newcastle United 4-1.
Pogba played a starring role in a dominant midfield display along Nemanja Matic, making 38 sprints and 64 passes and covering 8.5km of Old Trafford turf to highlight how important he could be for United heading into the hectic run of games over Christmas.
The 24-year-old set up Anthony Martial's equaliser with a delightful stood-up cross and capped his contribution with a tap-in the second half, before receiving a standing ovation when he was replaced by Marouane Fellaini after 70 minutes.
"To come back, to play again, to see Old Trafford, to score on my comeback, I feel blessed," Pogba told MUTV after the game. "I've trained very hard to come back fit and I feel good."
Jose Mourinho saluted Pogba’s performance, saying: "He was different class. He looked like he wasn't out for such a long time without playing football. He affects our football; with him we have much more creation."
