Despite having Gabriel Jesus sent off midway through the second half,  Everton opened the scoring for Tite’s side before Peru pulled one back from the penalty spot.

Gabriel Jesus scored just before half-time, before picking up a second yellow for a  for a challenge on Carlos Zambrano. Brazil sealed the victory from the penalty spot on the 90th minute from Richarlison for a first continental crown since 2007.

Brazil opened the scoring as a raking long ball from Dani Alves picked out Gabriel Jesus, a  perfect cross to the back post found Everton who was unmarked and knocked the ball past Pedro Gallese.

Buoyed by the Maracana faithful, Brazil perhaps should have put the tie beyond doubt minutes later. After a period of slick passing play from the side, eventually saw Roberto Firmino drill a ball across the box to Philippe Coutinho the first-time stab at the ball flew just wide of Gallese’s goal.

Peru still threatened from set-pieces and needed a piece of fortune to get back into the contest. A pass in the penalty box from Peruvian midfielder Christian Cueva hit the arm of Thiago Silva after a quick VAR check, referee Roberto Tobar pointed for the spot-kick.

Veteran striker Paolo Guerrero stepped up and comfortably dispatched the penalty, much to the ire of the partisan crowd. Thankfully they would have something to cheer about moments later.

Roberto Firmino diligently won the ball back with a sliding tackle, recycling the ball to Arthur. The Barcelona midfielder picked out Gabriel Jesus who set himself with a touch before drilling the ball into the bottom corner.

The second half saw Brazil push for a third to kill off the contest, whilst leaving themselves vulnerable on the counter. Phillipe Coutinho, who has thrived as a playmaker in the absence of Neymar aimed for the top corner, but his shot floated just wide.

Referee Roberto Tobar was to play a crucial role as Gabriel Jesus picked up a second yellow for barging into Carlos Zambrano, reducing Brazil to ten men with twenty minutes to play. Peru sprung into life and quickly created two chances.

Defender Miguel Trauco drilled a shot at Allisson from a tight angle, Whilst the resulting corner was cleared into the path of Edison Flores who fizzed a shot just wide. Brazil was living dangerously, Tite duly tightened things up throwing on Eder Militao and Richarlinson to offer some defensive stability.

The drama wasn’t to end and in the final moments, Brazil won a penalty as Zambrano pulled down Everton. After a quick VAR check, Richarlison stepped up and make no mistake drilling the ball into the bottom corner to seal a ninth Copa America for the Seleção.
