EFL: Arsenal humbled 0-2 by Southampton: Jordy Clasie and Ryan Bertrand send the Saints into EFL Cup semi-finals
-- EFL Cup semi-final draw: Man Utd vs Hull and Southampton vs Liverpool
Jordy Clasie opened the scoring with his first Southampton goal after drilling home past Emiliano Martinez, and the Saints doubled their lead in the 38th minute when Ryan Bertrand found the bottom corner from 18 yards.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger was forced into substitution after Mohamed Elneny picked up first-half knock.
A second string Arsenal team struggled to deal with the pace of Southampton's attack at the Emirates.
The student taught his master a thing or two as Arsene Wenger’s managerial protege Claude Puel executed a smash-and-grab raid at the Emirates and Southampton booked their place in the EFL Cup semi-finals.
Arsenal boss Wenger, who managed Puel as a player at Monaco, persuaded his countryman to take the St Mary’s job in the summer. He will wish he hadn’t after watching his side fall to their first defeat since their opening day loss to Liverpool — a 19-game run.
Puel is now just a two-legged tie from a Wembley final after goals from Jordy Clasie and Ryan Bertrand earned his side a last-four clash with Liverpool.
Arsene Wenger, who has never won the League Cup during his time with Arsenal, watched his second string team struggle
The Frenchman would gladly accept this defeat if it guaranteed Premier League or Champions League glory.
He would even take winning the FA Cup and a top-four Premier League finish over winning the EFL Cup.
Nonetheless, it is one trophy gone for the season. Have Arsenal got what it takes to win one of the remaining three? Time will tell.
