AWCON 2016: Super Falcons Beat Banyana 1-0 To Reach The Final Against Host, Cameroon

Desire Oparanozie put the Falcons ahead in the game, scoring the decisive goal nine minutes into the second half.

Banyana Banyana dominated proceedings in the first half as the defending champions struggled to put passes together with Oparanozie, who was just starting a game for the first time in the competition, lacking support up front.

Nigeria’s Super Falcons will face hosts Cameroon in the final of the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations on Saturday following this 1-0 win against South Africa in a keenly contested semi-final tie in Limbe on Tuesday.

Despite having the ascendency in most part of the game, the South Africans struggled to break down the Super Falcons defence which was marshalled by Osinachi Ohale.

Ngozi Okobi and Oparanozie had chances to put Nigeria ahead earlier in the game, but failed to hit the back of the net.

The Bayana Bayama had the ball in the the net minutes before the break but that effort was ruled out for offside.

Oparanozie gave Florence Omagbemi’s side the lead in the 53rd from a well struck freekick.

South Africa came close to grabbing the leveller six minutes before the final whistle but  Ohale made a well timed clearance off the line.

The Falcons were denied a penalty a minute later when Asisat Oshoala was brought down in the box but the referee waved  play-on.

In the earlier game, Cameroon overpowered Ghana to reach AWCON final against the defending champions, the Falcons.

Hosts Cameroon defeated Ghana 1-0 in their semi final tie, Tuesday, to proceed to finals.

This will be Cameroon's third AWCON final. They lost in the 2004 and 2014 finals to Nigeria's Super Falcons.

The lone goal against Ghana was scored by Raissa Feudjio in the 72nd minute, as she latched on to a loose ball inside Ghana's 18 yard box after the Black Queens keeper Nana Ashantewa failed to hold a cross.

Ghana will hope to take something from the tournament when they face South Africa in the third place match on Friday.
