EPL: Rashford Inspires Man Utd Again, Strikes In 2-0 Win Against Leeds

Marcus Rashford extended his hot streak with the late goal that inspired Manchester United’s 2-0 win against old rivals Leeds on Sunday.

After Rashford scored to spark United’s comeback from two goals down in Wednesday’s 2-2 draw with Leeds, Rashford tormented the Yorkshire club once again.

Rashford netted with 10 minutes left at Elland Road to make it four successive Premier League games with a goal for the England forward, who has scored in eight of his last nine appearances in the competition.

Following Alejandro Garnacho’s frustrated reaction to being substituted on Wednesday, the Argentine teenager made amends as he came off the bench to seal United’s hard-fought victory five minutes after Rashford’s goal.

United’s win was just their second in their last five league games, although they have now lost just once in their last 17 matches in all competitions.

Erik ten Hag’s side moved up to second place, although Manchester City would go back above them if they beat Aston Villa later on Sunday.

More importantly, United are seven points clear of fifth placed Tottenham in the race to qualify for the Champions League via a top four finish.

The clash was marred by offensive taunts from the stands, with Leeds fans singing about the 1958 Munich air crash that killed several United players and their rivals in the away end responding by chanting about the deaths of two Leeds fans in Istanbul in 2000.

Fourth bottom Leeds are without a win in their last nine league games and would drop into the relegation zone if Everton beat Liverpool on Monday.

Since sacking Jesse Marsch on Monday, Leeds have seen their move for Rayo Vallecano boss Andoni Iraola blocked by his club, while Feyenoord’s Arne Slot and West Brom’s Carlos Corberan ruled themselves out of contention.

Leeds chief executive Angus Kinnear insists the search is “well advanced”, but Michael Skubala was in charge for a second game on a caretaker basis.

Ten Hag: Man Utd lacked composure before late goals

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag told Sky Sports: "We needed more composure in the game and I think that was the big problem. It's normal because it's a derby, it's a rivalry, but in possession you have to be calm and we were not calm enough.

"Once again though we showed we are a squad and we are the only team in the whole of Europe that are playing in four competitions. You have to use your squad when it's like that and everyone is contributing, everyone is important and that's a good thing to know.

"Then you can use that tactically and we did today. We're happy with the win, to go to Elland Road and collect three points, but I'm still a little bit disappointed to drop two points against them on Wednesday because it was unnecessary."

Skubala: The first goal cost Leeds

Leeds interim boss Michael Skubala told Sky Sports: "I'm disappointed because I thought we played well. It was a tight game in the first half and a bit cagey, but I thought both teams had a good structure and were tactically sound.

"In the second half, I thought we came out the better team and we should have scored a goal to open the game up, but goals change games and the first goal changed the game in the 80th minute with their class.

"I try to be positive and the group tries to be positive. We try to go after the game and try to win it. I was just hoping we'd get a goal in the first 20 minutes of the first half.

"Not scoring the first goal [has cost us]. They scored the first goal and we had to then change our shape and in the end, we conceded the second and that's the difference at the top level."

Sky Sports' Dan Sansom:

When Erik ten Hag was selecting his starting line-ups for Manchester United's two games with Leeds this week, the lack of midfield options at his disposal would have surely concerned him.

With Casemiro suspended, Scott McTominay injured, and Christian Eriksen and Donny van de Beek out for the long term, United's strength in depth in the middle of the pitch has been analysed more in recent weeks than at any point this season.

Wednesday's draw at Old Trafford only highlighted that issue but after a 2-0 win at Elland Road on Sunday, the outlook has changed slightly thanks to Fred's player-of-the-match performance.

Opta stats: Leeds' winless run continues

Leeds United are winless in nine games in the Premier League (D4 L5), their longest winless run in the competition since 10 games between March and August in 1997.

Manchester United have won consecutive league games against Leeds United at Elland Road for the first time since October 1976.

Manchester United's Marcus Rashford has scored 21 goals in all competitions this season, only scoring more goals during the 2019-20 campaign (22).

David de Gea made his 400th Premier League appearance in this match - only Ryan Giggs (632) and Paul Scholes (499) have played more games for Manchester United in the competition.
