China-based forward Ighalo bundled home a scrappy opener but Clarence Seedorf’s Cameroon hit back through Stephane Bahoken and Clinton Njie with two quick-fire goals before half-time.

Nigeria drew level as Ighalo volleyed in his second just past the hour and he then turned provider to play in Iwobi to steer home three minutes later and set up the prospect of a highly anticipated quarter-final clash with hosts and favourites Egypt.

Seedorf’s penchant for change has seen the former Dutch star heavily rotate his Cameroon side in Egypt, with Karl Toko Ekambi dropping to the bench here and 2017 player of the tournament Christian Bassogog recalled along with Clinton Njie in a bid to breathe life into a faltering attack.

The Super Eagles eliminated Cameroon in the first knockout round the last time they were reigning champions in 2004, and their bid to repeat history looked on when Ighalo nudged Nigeria ahead with a scrappy opening goal after 19 minutes.

Thembinkosi Lorch struck in the closing stages to stun Javier Aguirre's side and keep alive their challenge to become continental champions for just the second time.

Stuart Baxter's side came in for heavy criticism during the group stage as they scraped through despite losing to Ivory Coast and Morocco, but they responded with a disciplined and clinical display that saw them keep Mohamed Salah quiet and make the most of Lorch's late opening.

They will face Nigeria in last eight after the Super Eagles earlier saw off Cameroon 3-2 in a thriller.

Percy Tau's dipping free-kick was brilliantly tipped over by Mohamed El-Shenawy as the half begun in lively fashion.

The best chance of the first 45 minutes fell to Trezeguet, who could only shoot tamely at Ronwen Williams after being set up by Salah following a quick break.

Trezeguet was again set up six yards from goal after a brilliant pass from Salah early in the second half, but his finish was once more a poor one.

Egypt were beginning to assume more control on proceedings but creating chances was still posing a problem, and South Africa captain Thulani Hlatshwayo was only feet from finding the bottom-left corner with a header from a Lorch delivery.

As Egypt continued to throw caution to the wind, they were stung on the break with five minutes of normal time to go. A well-worked move saw Lebo Mothiba stride into space and square the ball for Lorch, who kept his composure to side-foot past El-Shenawy and send his side into the last eight.

MOROCCO VS BENIN

It was an agonising occasion for Morocco after they allowed the chance to advance slip through their fingers.

The Moroccans had dominated possession in the first half, and they appeared the most likely to break the deadlock after half-time.

However, Moise Adilehou netted against the run of play after 53 minutes for Benin, with the scorer latching onto Cebio Soukou's cross.

The Atlas Lions immediately retaliated in their chase for an equaliser, and the game was drawn level by Youssef En-Nesyri with 15 minutes remaining.

En-Nesyri found the bottom corner, allowing his team the opportunity to push for a victory.

A Moubarak Boussoufa free-kick almost gave Herve Renard's side the winner in the last minute, but Benin continued to defend in numbers, with extra time on the cards.

There appeared to be disaster for Benin deep into injury time. Stephane Sessegnon fouled Achraf Hakimi in the box, allowing Ziyech a last-gasp chance of closing out the game.

However, the Ajax player hit the post from the penalty spot, and the game went into extra time.

Benin's Khaled Adenon was given his marching orders for a second yellow card in the first half of extra time.

Benin sat deep and hung on to force penalties. In the shootout, Morocco's Sofiane Boufal missed the target, and Benin took a 3-1 lead.

En-Nesyri then missed from the spot, allowing Mama Seibou to convert for a famous victory for the surprise winners.

SENEGAL VS UGANDA

Senegal will meet Benin in the quarter-finals after defeating Uganda 1-0.

Both teams were group runners-up, but Senegal's strength and depth gave them the edge.

Uganda had plenty of moments in attacking positions, but they failed to convert opportunities.

Senegal had only two shots on target in the game, and Mane's early finish was enough to advance.

Uganda goalkeeper Denis Onyango was lucky not to be sent off on the hour mark, with the stopper sliding through Mane in the box.

However, the poor challenge was not punished from the spot. Mane's penalty was saved, providing hope for the Cranes.

Uganda rallied in the closing stages, but they failed to hurt the Senegalese defence marshalled by Napoli's Kalidou Koulibaly.
