UEFA Champions league round 16 Results: ManU 0-0 Sevilla, Shakhter 2-1 Roma, See overall top scorers

Shakhtar 2-1 Roma
Shakhtar Donetsk turned around a 1-0 deficit to beat AS Roma in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League round-of-16 clash on Wednesday, while Manchester United were held to a 0-0 stalemate at Sevilla.

Fred's wonderful free-kick earned Shakhtar a 2-1 win over Roma in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie.

His 25-yard free-kick rocketed in off the bar to give the hosts a lead to take back to the Italian capital in three weeks' time, and gave them a fourth win from five attempts against Roma in the Champions League.

The visitors had looked the more potent before the break and led when Edin Dzeko's brilliant ball inside Ismaily played Cengiz Under through, and the 20-year-old fired in his fifth goal in four games.

Cengiz Under netted his fifth goal in four games for Roma as the Giallorossi took a one-goal lead into the break in Ukraine, but Facundo Ferreyra and Fred hit back after the interval to secure a 2-1 win for the hosts.

The Red Devils conceded only two goals in three away matches during the group stage and kept up that record by clinching a draw in Seville, although their failure to secure an away goal could trouble manager Jose Mourinho.

Read on for a roundup of Wednesday's results from the Champions League round of 16, complete with an updated look at the competition's top scorers.

MANCHESTER UNITED 0—0 SEVILLA

David de Gea's stunning first-half save helped Manchester United claim a creditable draw at Sevilla in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie.

The Spain keeper had kept out efforts from Joaquin Correa and Steven N'Zonzi before showing quick reflexes to produce a one-handed save on the stroke of half-time and deny Luis Muriel's header.

United, who were playing their first Champions League knockout game in four years, offered little offensively, with Romelu Lukaku spurning their best chance when he volleyed well over early on before substitute Marcus Rashford dragged a shot wide in the closing stages.

Paul Pogba started on the bench for the visitors, but came on after just 17 minutes following an injury to Ander Herrera.

Sevilla finished the game with 25 attempts on goal but a mixture of De Gea's saves and poor finishing from the hosts left them frustrated at the final whistle.

Manchester United will be the happier of the two teams heading into the return leg at Old Trafford on Tuesday, 13 March with Jose Mourinho's side winning 15 of their 18 games on home soil this season.

RECAP

It's not in Mourinho's usual methods to go on the offensive when playing away from home in high-risk situations, although it was arguably just a lack of overall quality that saw United fail to score on Wednesday.

Romelu Lukaku travelled to Spain with four Champions League goals to his name this season but was unable to add to that count on Wednesday, and the striker struggled for service throughout, Ian Wright told BBC 5 live Sport:

Sevilla defender Clement Lenglet did a fine job of containing the Belgium international, who did have the ball in the net late on but saw his effort correctly ruled out for handball.

It was an off night for the Red Devils in almost every attacking aspect, with the only real positive of their trip being the clean sheet they'll take back to Old Trafford for the return leg on March 13.

It was a disappointing night for both teams, however, per BBC 5 live's Mina Rzouki:

In Donetsk, an inch-perfect free-kick stunner from Fred sealed a memorable comeback win over Roma for Shakhtar, who will now take a 2-1 advantage to the Stadio Olimpico next month.

Copa 90 noted the standard of goalkeeper the Brazilian midfielder had to beat as he completed the Miners' turnaround on home soil, clipping in a delightfully weighted strike from the right side of the box off the underside of the crossbar:

Under had continued his rich vein of scoring form by latching on to an Edin Dzeko pass and ricocheting his effort in off Shakhtar goalkeeper Andriy Pyatov to get his Champions League account up and running, per Squawka:

However, Shakhtar have an in-form star of their own, and Ferreyra bagged his 12th goal in his last 13 games for the club to pull them level before Fred's late intervention saw them wrestle the win from their guests.

Roma can still be pleased with the fact they got an away goal on the board in Ukraine, but the Giallorossi haven't kept a clean sheet at home in 2018 thus far and may need to rely on outscoring their foes in the second leg.
