Manchester United are on the verge of booking their place in the UEFA Champions League knockout stages after beating Benfica 2-0 on Tuesday, while Chelsea were dethroned from the Group C summit following a 3-0 loss to AS Roma.
Elsewhere, the Spanish titans got a Halloween fright as Barcelona played out a bore draw in their trip to Olympiakos, while Atletico Madrid and Qarabag each finished with 10 men in a 1-1 draw.
Paris Saint-Germain secured their place in the round of 16 after drubbing Anderlecht 5-0 at home, while Bayern Munich are one result away from joining them after they edged Celtic 2-1 in Glasgow.
Juventus came away from Lisbon with a point from their 1-1 draw at Sporting CP thanks to Gonzalo Higuain's late leveller, while Basel let a one-goal lead slip as they fell 2-1 at home to CSKA Moscow.
Man Utd 2-0 Benfica
Manchester United edged closer to the Champions League last 16 with a 2-0 win over Benfica at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.
United needed to better CSKA Moscow's result to qualify, but the Russian side's 2-1 win in Basel means Jose Mourinho's side still need a point in their last two Group A games to make the last 16.
Mile Svilar, the 18-year-old goalkeeper criticised in the first game a fortnight ago for a mistake in United's 1-0 win, saved an Anthony Martial penalty (15) and then scored an unfortunate own goal as Nemanja Matic's effort ricocheted off the post and then off his back before crossing the line (45).
Benfica pushed for an equaliser in the second half, hitting the post through Raul Jimenez, but United wrapped up the win through Daley Blind's penalty (78) after Marcus Rashford had been brought down.
United were awarded a penalty after 14 minutes as Douglas handled following a challenge with Martial, but the Frenchman's spot-kick was saved superbly by Svilar down to his right.
At the other end, David de Gea made a fingertip save from Ruben Dias' 25-yard piledriver, before United took the lead in bizarre circumstances.
Olympiakos 0-0 Barcelona
Barcelona dropped points for the first time in this year's Champions League as they were held to a goalless draw by Olympiakos.
The Greek hosts set themselves up to make things difficult for the Catalans who struggled to create much in front of a hostile atmosphere in Athens.
The visitors dominated possession and spent much of the game camped in the Olympiakos half but could not find the cutting edge required.
Roma 3-0 Chelsea
Chelsea suffered a Champions League setback as a slack performance led to a 3-0 defeat to Roma on Tuesday.
Stephan El Shaarawy put the hosts ahead with a brilliant strike after just 39 seconds - the fastest goal in the Champions League this season.
El Shaarawy added a second before half-time after an error from former Roma defender Antonio Rudiger, and the home side took advantage of another mistake to score a third in the 63rd minute through Diego Perotti.
The win sees Roma move to the top of the group, one point ahead of Chelsea, who, on a night when they were well below their best, were grateful to see Qarabag hold Atletico Madrid to a 1-1 draw in Spain.
That result means Chelsea are still well positioned to finish in the top two in Group C, and was the only positive as the Blues suffered their joint-biggest defeat under Antonio Conte.
