EPL: Manchester United beat Sunderland 3-0 to move 5th place

Manchester United have moved into fifth place in the Premier League table with a comfortable 3-0 triumph over Sunderland.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic opened the scoring for the visitors, before Sunderland were controversially reduced to 10 men when Sebastian Larsson was sent off for a late challenge on Ander Herrera.

United remained in control after the break, and goals from Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Marcus Rashford ensured that Sunderland remained 10 points adrift of safety.

The only times Manchester United have lost at Sunderland in the last 16 years came with the hapless David Moyes and Louis van Gaal in charge.

Moyes, in fairness, also won at the Stadium of Light (unlike Van Gaal) on that uplifting October day in 2013 when Adnan Januzaj flattered to deceive with two superb strikes. It might remain Moyes' and Januzaj's only fond memory of Sunderland's stadium.

"What I hadn't put down was a win against a Manchester United," Moyes said. It must reassure Sunderland supporters their manager does not plan to win certain matches.

United's trip to the Premier League's basement club came before the Europa League recommences at Anderlecht on Thursday and Jose Mourinho ensured the best start to the week with a 3-0 win over Sunderland.

Goals from Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Marcus Rashford secured the three points, while Seb Larsson was sent off for the Black Cats.
