Sadio Mane scored twice as Reds recorded first league win of 2017.
A great return to form for Liverpool as they bag their first win in the EPL this year. Spurs were blown out of the water with an early 20 minute blitz and never really recovered.
A happy new year at last for Jurgen Klopp, for whom the dismal league form of 2017 finally took an upturn with Liverpool’s first victory since the very end of December, and a ray of hope for the future in the form of the sensational Sadio Mané.
This was the evening that Mané at least tried to put a little glow into the dying embers of Liverpool’s title challenge, and gave them their first league win in six games, and only their second victory of 2017 after the FA Cup third round replay triumph over Plymouth Argyle.
This victory for Liverpool only handed the EPL title to Chelsea as some analysts would say, because at full-time Spurs, second on the log, fell 12points behind league leaders, Chelsea. But this was cut to 10points as Chelsea failed to beat Burnley after being held 1-1. However, Chelsea still enjoys huge advantage at the summit until Manchester City game on Monday, which has every potential of reducing Chelsea's lead to 8 points if City wins.
Mané was back at Anfield for the first time since his return from African Nations duty and his goals came in the space of two minutes. After that, Lloris made two exceptional saves from the Senegal international.
On balance Liverpool deserved a third before the break but never got it. The first goal demonstrated the raw pace of Mané – Ben Davies was losing so much ground on the Liverpool striker as he went through that even when the left-back raised a tentative arm to try to reach out and foul his opponent the gap was already too big.
