EPL: Manchester United Held 0-0 By Burnley As Zlatan Fired Too Many Blanks

Zlatan rues a miss

Manchester United welcomed Burnley to Old Trafford as they looked to bounce back from last weekend's humiliating defeat at Chelsea. But the 90 minutes never went to plan for the home side as Manchester United was held to a goalless draw at Old Trafford by Burnley.

Hosts had 37 shots but non found the back of the net.

United are now eight points off the top of the table.

Manager Jose Mourinho was sent to the stands and Ander Herrera saw red as the home side were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw despite dominating the game.

Burnley keeper and ex-United player Tom Heaton had an outstanding game.

Star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic had another bad game for the hosts.

Manchester United might have managed 37 shots against Burnley, but they could not put a single one in the back of the net.

United are now eight points behind joint leaders Manchester City and Arsenal, and the pressure is ever-increasing on manager Jose Mourinho and his under-performing star players.

Burnley meanwhile were excellent in defence as they kept a clean sheet despite having only 28 per cent possession at Old Trafford.

Tom Heaton produced a string of heroic saves to thwart the hosts on his return to Old Trafford with both Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Jesse Lingard denied by the former United trainee goalkeeper, before Mourinho was sent to the stands as his frustrations boiled over.

Midfielder Ander Herrera saw red for a second bookable offence, as United's attempts to take control of the game threatened to hand the visitors the initiative.

PLAYER RATINGS:

Tom Heaton the star of the show as Zlatan Ibrahimovic flops once again.

A series of super saves earned Burnley keeper Tom Heaton the highest rating from Sportsmail +6
David De Gea 6 – Spaniard was a virtual spectator even when United went down to 10 men. Hardly had a save to make.
Matteo Darmian 6 – Impressed in place of the injured Valencia, but guilty of going down too easily to try and win a penalty just before half-time.
Daley Blind 7 – Marshalled the defence well in the absence of Bailly, Valencia and Smalling. Hardly put a foot wrong all game.
Marcos Rojo 6 – Faced the physhical challenge of Vokes on first Premier League start of the season but handled it well on the whole.
Luke Shaw 6 – Improved as the game wore on again. Great sliding challenge on Gray stopped the striker going through on goal.
Paul Pogba 5.5 – Showed flashes of inspiration in the final third but still needs to do so much more to live up to expectation.
Ander Herrera 6 – Unlucky to be sent off when he slipped into Marney having already been booked for a late challenge on the Burnley No.8.
Jesse Lingard 6.5 – Will wonder how he didn’t score. Denied by great fingertip save from Heaton in the first half, and hit the post in the second.
Juan Mata 6.5 – United’s captain for the day so nearly added to his midweek winner against City but thwarted twice by Heaton.
Marcus Rashford 6 – Plenty of effort down the left flank but lacked penetration and was replaced as United sought a breakthrough.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic 5 – How didn’t he score right at the end? Wasn’t afraid to go for goal but now on his worst barren run in the league for nine years.
Subs: Rooney (for Lingard 73, 6), Fellaini (for Mata 73, 6) Depay (for Rashford 82)
Manchester United had 37 shots against Burnley - but did not score a single one

MOURINHO MELTDOWN:

United boss facing ban after being sent off then sending notes to Faria and refusing to speak after draw
Jose Mourinho facing touchline or stadium ban after Manchester United manager was sent off
Jose Mourinho received the 13th punishment of his managerial career after being sent off at Old Trafford during half-time of Manchester United's goalless draw with Burnley.

The controversial Portuguese manager now faces a second FA charge and a possible touchline or stadium ban after protesting to referee Mark Clattenburg in the tunnel over a penalty appeal when United defender Matteo Darmian was challenged by Burnley's John Flanagan.

Mourinho was last week charged with misconduct following comments he made about referee Anthony Taylor prior to United's game at Liverpool on October 17. He also failed to show up for post-match interviews, choosing to send No2 Rui Faria (bottom right) in his place.
