English Premier League title holders, Leicester City win their first UEFA Champions League match.
Leicester cruised to a debut victory in the Champions League as they defeated Club Brugge 3-0 at the Jan Breydel Stadium on Wednesday night.
Riyad Mahrez scored twice to enable Leicester beat Club Brugge in their home.
Leicester boss Claudio Ranieri made two changes to the starting line-up following Saturday’s 4-1 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield.
Ranieri gave club-record signing Islam Slimani a chance to debut on the night.
Marc Albrighton gave the English champions the opener, volleying home a long throw from Luis Hernandez.
Leicester City Win Club Brugge 3-0
The former Aston Villa midfielder scored just five minutes after kickoff, putting Leicester in the lead.
Club Brugge should have taken the lead early in the game when Jose Izquierdo got a clear chance on goal only to shoot wide off target.
Riyad Mahrez then doubled Leicester’s lead in the 29th minute with a superb free-kick from the edge of the box.
Few minutes after the break, Mahrez made it 3 with a strike from the penalty spot.
Jamie Vardy had been fouled in the box by Brugge goalkeeper Ludovic Butelle giving rise to the penalty.
Brugge were extremely fortunate not to be reduced to 10 men after Timmy Simons brought down Vardy on the edge of the box in the 28th minute.
Leicester can now confidently cruise back to the East Midlands with all three points from tonight’s game.
At the final whistle, Brugges did a bizarre lap of honour, while Leicester players saluted their fans humbly exited the pitch.
Leicester City last won a major European title in the 2000-2001 season with the UEFA Cup.
