Sterling's late equalizer salvaged a point for City

Former Manchester United striker gave Everton a first half lead before substitute Raheem Sterling equalised for City less than 10 minutes left in the game.

Rooney’s goal was his 200th in the EPL making him the second player after Alan Shearer (260) to hit the 200 milestone.

Both teams had a player sent off as former Tottenham Hotspur defender Kyle Walker was sent off for City and Morgan Schneiderlin for Everton.

Raheem Sterling's volley salvaged a point for 10-man Manchester City as Everton were denied victory on the night Wayne Rooney scored his 200th Premier League goal.

City were left with an uphill battle after Rooney's strike was followed by Kyle Walker's dismissal after two quick bookings just 44 minutes into his home debut.

But Pep Guardiola's side showed belief and spirit to avoid their second home defeat under the Spaniard.

Rooney, 31, looked to have given Everton victory after he slid Dominic Calvert-Lewin's square pass between City keeper Ederson's legs from eight yards.

And the Toffees' cause was helped when England full-back Walker collided with Leighton Baines and was then booked again, rather harshly, for catching Calvert-Lewin in the face as they competed for a high ball.

Despite their numerical disadvantage, the home side continued to press after the break and were rewarded when Sterling fired in Mason Holgate's weak defensive header.

Everton also finished with 10 men when midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin was shown a second yellow card for catching Sergio Aguero late.

City moved up to fifth on four points in the league table, while Everton, also on four points, are eighth.

City had the game’s first big chance in the sixth minute following a dangerous free-kick swung in by Kevin De Bruyne which Rooney almost diverted into his own net.

Three minutes later Sergio Aguero tried a shot from distance but his effort swerved wide off target.

City went close again and they were almost rewarded in the 26th minute after a low strike from Nicolas Otamendi which was parried by Jordan Pickford.

City continued to ask all the questions and should have taken the lead on 32 minutes but Aguero who was played through on goal by De Bruyne delayed his shot before the ball was cleared off his feet.

Just two minutes later David Silva hit a superb low shot off a pass from Aguero which came off the post.

Against the run of play City found themselves 1-0 down as Rooney finished off a beautifully laid pass from Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who had left Fernandinho on the floor with a feint.

Things went from bad to worse for City as new signing Walker was sent off on his home debut after receiving his second yellow card for a collision with Calvert-Lewin.

City made an early change in the second half with Sterling replacing Gabriel Jesus.

City substitute Bernardo Silva almost made an immediate impact sfter coming on but miscued his effort which went wide.

Two minutes later Sterling unleashed a shot from distance but his effort went over the bar.

Sterling was presented with another chance in the 74th minute after he was set up by Aguero but blazed his effort way over the bar from range.

Sterling finally got on the score sheet in the 82nd minute volleying in from the edge of the box to draw City level.

With one minute left, Everton were reduced to 10 men as Schneiderlin was shown a second yellow card for a foul on Aguero.

City almost won it in the final seconds of the game but Davy Klaassen made a timely clearance from a dangerous cross away for a corner.

ROONEY

Wayne Rooney has now scored nine goals against Manchester City, with only Alan Shearer scoring more against them.

Rooney became only the second player to score 200 Premier League goals - after former Blackburn and Newcastle striker Alan Shearer - when he put the visitors ahead after 35 minutes.

The former Manchester United forward cupped his ears in front of the home fans as he celebrated his second goal in two league matches since rejoining Everton.

Perhaps it was no surprise Rooney netted the landmark goal at Etihad Stadium, having also scored his 50th and 150th Premier League goals against United's neighbours City.

However, the ease with which City's new £35m keeper Ederson allowed his first-time shot in was more of a surprise.

"It is a good contact from Rooney, but you have to say it went straight at Ederson," said former Toffees defender Phil Neville on BBC Radio 5 live. "You have to expect your keeper to save it."

Rooney, who scored his first top-flight goal as a 16-year-old for the Toffees against Arsenal in October 2002, hit the double century in his 462nd league match in front of his former Red Devils managers Sir Alex Ferguson and Jose Mourinho.

Ultimately, the England international did not prove to be the match-winner like he was against Stoke last weekend - but he was still smiling at the final whistle as the early part of his Everton return continues to be fruitful.

"It was nice with my history with Manchester United - and to do it in such an important game for us and so early in the season, it was a sweet moment," said Rooney.

"I'm sure the red half of Manchester will have enjoyed it as well."
