Wimbledon : Djokovic, Federer stroll into 3rd round, Rafa Nadal keeps up his bid

Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic made swift progress with straight-set wins in the second round at Wimbledon.

Third seed Federer, seeking a record eighth title, beat Dusan Lajovic 7-6, 6-3, 6-2 on a hot evening on Centre Court.

Three-time champion Djokovic raced to a 6-2 6-2 6-1 victory in just over 90 minutes on Court One against 22-year-old Adam Pavlasek.

Grigor Dimitrov gave an exhibition of his talent, striding emphatically into the third round with a 6-3 6-2 6-1 win over Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis.

There were also wins for David Ferrer, Gael Monfils and Mischa Zverez.

Andy Murray came through a thrilling encounter against Italian Fabio Fognini to book his spot in the fourth round of Wimbledon with a 6-2 4-6 6-1 7-5 victory on Friday.
The Wimbledon champion looked almost certain to be dragged into a fifth set by Fognini when he trailed 5-2 in the fourth, but he showed his mettle to save five set points and win five straight games to wrap up the victory in two hours 39 minutes.

The momentum in the match swung dramatically from one player to the other with Murray breaking twice to clinch the first set before the Italian battled back in the second to level.

Britain’s world number one regained the initiative as Fognini appeared to be struggling with an ankle injury, but the top seed’s hopes of an easy route into the last 16 were smashed as the Italian came out firing in the fourth.

Fognini broke Murray in the fifth game and then had a series of set points both on his serve and the Briton’s.

Yet, with the Centre Court crowd willing Murray on, he fought back, breaking twice before serving out with an ace.

Rafa Nadal kept up his bid for a third Wimbledon and French Open double, putting on an ominous show to beat Karen Khachanov 6-1 6-4 7-6(3) on Friday on Centre Court to reach the last 16.

The Spanish fourth seed scorched his way through the first set, threatening to sizzle the parched Centre Court grass with the pace of some of his shots.

However, while his Russian 30th seed opponent regrouped in sets two and three, the damage had been done.

A rejuvenated Nadal, 31, won his 10th French Open title this year without dropping a set and has kept up the pace at Wimbledon as he targets his first grass court slam title since 2010.

Khachanov came close to pushing him into a fourth set to reach set point in the 12th game of the third set, but Nadal was too strong and accurate at the net and from the baseline.
