UEFA Champions League: Real Madrid came from behind to beat Bayern Munich 2-1 in 1st leg quarter finals

Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice as Real Madrid came from behind to beat 10-man Bayern Munich 2-1 in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final at the Allianz Arena.

Bayern, who had thrashed English club Arsenal 10-2 on aggregate to take their place in the last eight, went in front after 26 minutes through a bullet header from Arturo Vidal.

The Chile midfielder, though, wasted a chance to double the German club's advantage in first-half stoppage time when he blasted a penalty over the crossbar after what looked a poor handball decision against Dani Carvajal.

Real were level two minutes into the second half when Ronaldo swept in a cross from Carvajal.

Bayern had to play the final 30 minutes a man down after Javi Martinez picked up two quick cautions. And Ronaldo took his tally to 100 European goals when he stabbed the ball past Manuel Neuer in the 77th minute to leave Carlo Ancelotti's men with it all to do in next week's second leg back at the Bernabeu.

Javi Martinez’s error in judgement to dangle out a leg and take down Ronaldo proved costly, with the Spaniard being sent off for a second yellow.

Credit to Marco Asensio, who made the difference as a substitute, offering width and pulling Bayern all over the pitch to ensure the Spaniards took advantage of the additional man.

Carlo Ancelotti looked to unlock Real Madrid by spreading the ball out wide and Los Blancos could not cope for long spells in the game.

Robben, especially, found joy with Toni Kroos lack of athleticism failing to plug the gap whenever Marcelo ventured out of position.

While Franck Ribery wandered inside untracked on numerous occasions, twisting and turning on the edge of the area, with the French winger earning the penalty in this manner.

As Ancelotti’s side tired, they failed to close the space out wide, with Asensio’s curling ball poked home by Ronaldo to win the game.

Bale injury:

Gareth Bale was taken off after barely an hour.

At the time it looked like a tactical change but now it has emerged he has a tight hamstring.

He told reporters in the mixed zone it was “not too bad” so he should be available for the weekend.
