Athletic wasted little time jumping out to a significant lead over Las Palmas, as the hosts were already up 3-1 after just 18 minutes. Sports writer Sid Lowe was shocked when he found out:

Las Palmas' defensive form has been dreadful of late, and a rampant Athletic side took full advantage. Within the first 10 minutes of the match, Mikel San Jose and Muniain had already given the Basques a two-goal lead.

Pedro Bigas restored some hope for the visitors before Aduriz struck for the first time to restore the two-goal advantage. The ageless wonder continues to defy Father Time, as shared by bet365:

Bilbao took their foot off the gas to end the half, but after the break, they went looking for more goals. Muniain and Aduriz, so often the main threats for Basques, hit again in the span of just minutes.

Las Palmas had a few half-chances to reduce the deficit late, with Bilbao in cruise-control on their way to the final whistle.

Sociedad sit just behind Athletic and Villarreal and are still alive in the hunt for a UEFA Champions League ticket, but their form has been dreadful of late, with just one win in their last five La Liga matches.

Sevilla were unable to close the gap on La Liga's leading trio after they were stifled to a 0-0 stalemate in their trip to Valencia on Sunday, which kept them three points adrift of third-placed Atletico Madrid.

Later, a second-string Celta Vigo side dazzled en route to a 3-0 triumph at Granada in preparation for Thursday's UEFA Europa League quarter-final second leg at Belgian club Genk.

Espanyol were also able to capitalise away from home and dealt Leganes their third successive defeat after triumphing 1-0 at the Estadio Municipal de Butarque, thanks to a Leo Baptistao goal.

Jonas Martin and Dani Ceballos were on target for Real Betis as they beat Eibar 2-0 at Estadio Benito Villamarin, a result that sees manager Victor Sanchez's outfit edge 12 points away from the relegation zone.

REAL MADRID: Isco scored in the last minute as Real Madrid twice came from behind to beat Sporting 3-2 and move six points clear of Barcelona at the top.

A hard one for Sporting to take. They fought hard, and scored two very good goals, but in the end they just couldn’t stop the Real Madrid train. By the end they looked completely exhausted, and that might be the nail in their relegation coffin.

For Real, that’s the perfect prep for the classic.

BARCELONA: Lionel Messi scored twice as below-par Barcelona laboured to a win over Real Sociedad to keep their La Liga title hopes alive.

The champions are three points below Real Madrid, who have a game in hand, going into El Clasico next weekend.

Messi fired Barca into the lead from 25 yards and scuffed home a second, his 498th goal for the club, before Samuel Umtiti's own goal gave La Real hope.
