EPL: Manchester United held 1-1 by Bournemouth, remain sixth place

Zlatan Ibrahimovic had a penalty saved as Manchester United were held to a controversy-filled 1-1 draw by 10-man Bournemouth.

Manchester United spurned a chance to move into the Premier League's top four after striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic missed a penalty in a 1-1 draw against 10-man Bournemouth on Saturday.

The result left United in sixth position on 49 points while Bournemouth, who had Andrew Surman sent off on the stroke of halftime for charging at Ibrahimovic, stayed 14th with 27 points.

Argentina defender Marcos Rojo fired the home side ahead in the 23rd minute with his first Premier League goal before Joshua King, a Manchester United academy product, levelled against the run of play with a 40th-minute penalty.

Bournemouth goalkeeper Artur Boruc shone with a string of excellent saves, denying a below-par Ibrahimovic three times before he parried the Swede's feeble spot-kick after Adam Smith handled Paul Pogba's acrobatic cut-back.

Manchester United remained sixth in the Premier League with a draw against 10-man Bournemouth in a match that had two unpleasant incidents involving Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Tyrone Mings.

After Joshua King's penalty cancelled out Marcos Rojo's 23rd-minute opener, there were two flash points before half time as Tyrone Mings stamped on the head of Ibrahimovic, and the Swede responded shortly afterwards by elbowing the defender as they competed at a corner.

Neither player was punished by referee Kevin Friend and instead Bournemouth's Andrew Surman was shown a second yellow card for pushing Ibrahimovic in the melee that followed.

Ibrahimovic was at the centre of the action again in the second half as he saw a penalty well saved by Artur Boruc.

And United could not find a winner as they were held to their seventh home draw in the Premier League this season.

Referee Kevin Friend was a critical figure in the contest as he did not send off Tyrone Mings, Harry Arter or Ibrahimovic, despite being solid cases for all three to be dismissed. Andrew Surman was the unlucky man that was sent off and Adam Smith was on the receiving end of a terrible penalty decision. Not a great game for the official.

Artur Boruc is the hero for the visitors as he made a number of fine stops, including a penalty save from Zlatan Ibrahimovic - who had a game to forget.

Bournemouth somehow secure a point from this fixture despite playing the second half with 10 men. Manchester United threw everything at the Cherries, but were unable to come away with the win.
