United States cantered home to win gold in 3:19.06 with the Jamaicans following them home in second in a time of 3.20.34.
The relay bronze is Team GB's 66th medal overall in Rio breaking the record set in London four years ago.
London 2012 - with 29 gold, 17 silver, 19 bronze and 65 medals in all - was Britain's most successful Games since 1908, which also took place in London.
UK Sport, the funding body, targeted more medals than four years ago and Britain now have 66 medals, 27 of them gold.
