Leicester City 1-0 Southampton: Wes Morgan's bullet header sends the EPL leaders seven points clear atop of Premier League
Leicester City beat Southampton courtesy of Wes Morgan's 38th-minute header to cruise seven points clear. The Foxes' skipper rose above Jordy Clasie to meet a left-wing Christian Fuchs cross to power into the corner.
Their victory at the King Power Stadium would have been far more comfortable but for Fraser Forster saves.
But Danny Simpson was perhaps fortunate to escape punishment after handling Sadio Mane shot in first-half.
With Tottenham dropping two points on Saturday night, Leicester are now overwhelming title favourites
The unbelievers will see only another win by the narrowest of margins. One-nil, for the fourth game in succession.
Wes Morgan scored the only goal in a 1-0 victory over Southampton.
The centre-back headed past Fraser Forster after 38 minutes to hand the Foxes a tight lead, which they held onto for the rest of the game.
Leicester were in control of the game straight after taking kick-off, taking advantage of Ronald Koeman’s decision to field a back-three.
With the wing-backs pressed high up the pitch, Jamie Vardy, Riyad Mahrez and Marc Albrighton constantly moved into the wide positions, playing a number of crosses into the box. Shinji Okazaki was tasked with getting on the end of the deliveries, but he failed to put any of his attempts on target.
The visitors from the South Coast were completely outplayed in the opening stages, failing to get out of their half for the first 15 minutes.
However, they held firm, and managed to have their first real attack on the 20 minute mark. Graziano Pelle broke down the right, but his cross was put behind by Morgan for Southampton’s first corner of the game. It was a sign that the Saints were growing into the game - and they should have taken the lead.
Pelle once again was involved in the build-up, setting up Sadio Mane with a perfectly timed through ball. The pacy forward took the ball around Kasper Schmeichel, but he rushed with his finish and hit the ball straight at the covering Danny Simpson.
There were shouts for a penalty, as the ball hit Simpson on the arm, but referee Michael Oliver turned down appeals from the visitors.
Jose Fonte had the next attempt. The centre-back picked the ball up 25 yards from goal, and his powerful attempt was flying into the back of the net. However, Schmeichel was up to the challenge, pushing the shot behind for a corner.
It appeared as if Koeman’s men were taking control of the game, and Jordy Clasie also went close with an attempt from outside the box, but it was Morgan who popped up to hand the Foxes the lead.
Christian Fuchs picked up the ball on the left-wing, and his perfect cross was met by an excellent header by the Leicester captain.
The 32-year-old has played every minute of this Premier League season, establishing himself as one of the best defenders in the division, and he was well deserving of his first goal of the campaign.
